Do you know why some of your best people are leaving for competitors?
The biggest reason people leave jobs is unhappiness with their manager.
In fast-growing companies, “managers” are often folks promoted from sales or technical roles. Just because someone was a great software engineer, sales, marketing or HR staffer, doesn’t mean they are automatically qualified to lead others.
Many of those same folks tell me they never even wanted to be in their current role! Most never received training for their new position and have no idea about how to manage and motivate others. That not only frustrates them and leads to burnout, but also makes their direct reports unhappy.
Managers who may have subject-matter expertise but no training to manage the interpersonal challenges inherent in managing teams, is the biggest reason their employees leave tech firms.
The best Founders understand that 2022 is the “Squid Games” amidst accelerating and well-funded competitors; now is the worst possible time to lose staff.
Smart Founders who have benefited themselves from coaching understand that investing in their managers’ training is essential to winning the game.
